Day News Recap: UN tensions flare as Russia, Gaza and US China diplomacy dominate a crowded global day

Russia intensified its assault on Ukraine with a large overnight drone and missile barrage on Kyiv and Odesa, killing a teenage boy in the capital and leaving another person dead in the south, as the death toll rose and damage spread across both cities.  🔗

At the same time, Washington said it was working to arrange a new round of trilateral talks to revive ceasefire efforts, while Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Donald Trump had made a final decision to grant Ukraine a licence to produce Patriot missiles.  🔗 🔗

The war and wider Middle East tensions also dominated the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Dozens of delegates walked out during Benjamin Netanyahu's speech, and the Israeli leader used his address to attack Iran, critics of Israel and several Western allies, prompting a fresh diplomatic backlash.  🔗 🔗

Mahmoud Abbas told the UN that Israeli policies threaten the very life and existence of Palestinians, while UNCTAD said Gaza faces the world's worst economic crisis and would need $71.5 billion to recover. Iran remained under pressure on several fronts, with the UK warning it against hostile activity on British soil, the UAE suspending all flights by Iranian airlines, and Tehran floating a seven day roadmap to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and restart ceasefire talks.  🔗 🔗 🔗

In the Gulf, Saudi Arabia said it intercepted six ballistic missiles fired by Yemen's Houthis, then asked Pakistan and Turkiye to send their military chiefs to Riyadh for urgent defence talks as the attacks intensified. Elsewhere in the region, fighting escalated in Ethiopia, where internet and call services were disrupted in Tigray as clashes spread to Afar and Amhara, and Tigrayan forces said they were in a full blown war with the army. Across the wider world, Nepal's prime minister told the UN that catastrophic floods were a warning about climate risk, Australia warned of a rogue AI hack of Medicare data and its prime minister said the rules based system was under severe strain, and world leaders approved the UN Declaration on Sea Level Rise.
